Senator Clinton highlights spike in National Service applications since 9/11
At series of events today at colleges and universities throughout the Northeast including the University of New Hampshire in Durham, U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton (NY-D) highlighted how eager young Americans are to give back to their country through National Service programs since 9/11. During her remarks at each event, Clinton honored the activism and public service of students and recent graduates. In particular, she noted that between 2000 and 2006, applications to Teach for America nearly tripled and that between 2004 and 2006, applications to the AmeriCorps VISTA program jumped 50%. "Knowledge is the Beginning"Wed, 05/30/2007 - 6:00pm Exeter Library, Exeter, NH SEACOAST PROGRESSIVE ALLIANCE "Knowledge Is The Beginning" Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at 7pm at the Exeter Public Library Set against the backdrop of violence in the Middle East, this documentary follows a collaboration between young musicians from both sides of the divide: Israelis, Palestinians, Egyptians, Jordanians and Syrians. Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim & Palestinian writer Edward Said founded the controversial West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in 1999. Dedicated to fostering peaceful coexistence in the Middle East, the orchestra has been an overwhelming success, furthering its founders' hopes that music can promote understanding and tolerance of different beliefs and cultures. The orchestra stands as a metaphor for what could be achieved in the Middle East. In the words of Barenboim: "The impossible is much easier than the difficult..." (2004, 90 minutes) Free and open to the public For more information, please call Herb Moyer 603 772 6910 Hampton Jefferson Jackson Dessert eventWed, 02/21/2007 - 6:30pm Wheaton J. Lane Room of the Hampton Lane Library According to Congressional Quarterly Politics, Carol Shea-Porter’s election to Congress last November “was one of the biggest House upsets in the nation.” So, what has Carol been doing in Washington since her election? You can find out by attending the Hampton Democratic Committee’s Jefferson-Jackson dessert reception scheduled from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21 in the Wheaton J. Lane Room of the Hampton Lane Library. Carol will be the featured speaker at this event. We have much catching up to do. Despite drawing a low number in the lottery for House offices assigned newly-elected freshmen, Carol got one of the best. How did that happen? Although a freshman legislator, Carol was appointed to the powerful Education and Labor Committee. How did that come about? To top that, she was selected for the prestigious Armed Services Committee, a post that will enable her to oversee the war in Iraq and look after the interests of Portsmouth Navy Yard. How did she get on that committee? Those are big-time appointments for a newly-elected congresswoman. NH Premier-Iraq For Sale: War ProfiteeringSun, 10/08/2006 - 1:00pm The Exeter Town Hall (by the Bandstand in the center of town) The Seacoast Progressive Alliance and DFNH are sponsoring this NH Premier of Robert Greenwald's new film. We will have Iraq war veterans present to set the stage prior to the film start at 2:30. You probably remember a few of Robert Greenwald's other movies such as Outfoxed and WalMart: The High Cost of Low Price. In Iraq for Sale, Robert takes you inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows and children who have been changed forever as a result of profiteering in the reconstruction of Iraq. The film uncovers the connections between private corporations making a killing in Iraq and the decision makers who let it happen. Halliburton, Dick Cheney and Republican leaders everywhere don't want you to see this movie, especially in October, just a few weeks before Election Day. People wishing to stay after the film will be encouraged to discuss the film with veterans and their neighbors. "911 Press for Truth"Wed, 09/13/2006 - 5:30pm Rye Library There will be a showing of the film "911 Press For Truth" at the Rye Library, 581 Washington Rd., Rye, NH. The showing will be followed by a discussion. The film is premiering in the US and around the world the week of September 11, 2006. According to the film web site, the "Jersey Girls" and the 911 Families play big roles, stripping away the cover-up and leaving the questions, bigger than ever, behind. This showing is being cosponsored by the Seacoast 9-11 Questions Committee, Seacoast Alliance for Democracy and Seacoast Peace Response. For more information contact Guy Chichester at guy_chi@msn.com or phone 603-964-6158. Healthcare Slides and Forum In ExeterMon, 03/27/2006 - 7:00pm Exeter Public Library The Seacoast Progressive Alliance asks: Do you believe that healthcare is a right? Do you find it offensive that a country that spends a greater share of its income on healthcare than other developed countries still manages to leave over 40 million citizens without care? Did you know that our system is ranked 37th in the world for healthcare outcomes? Are you spending more on healthcare than on your mortgage? Did you know that healthcare expenses are the major cause of personal bankruptcy in the US? Are you ready to demand that your elected officials support legislation NOW that is on par with some of the great legislation passed in the 20th Century? Do you still believe that the democratic process can work for the average person? Mark Patnaude of East Kingston is a reluctant public speaker. He is your neighbor helping open our eyes to the crisis before us. He is an unapologetic advocate for a single-payer system, and will be showing slides made available by Physicians for a National Health Plan at the Seacoast Progressive Alliance meeting on Monday, March 27th 7:00 pm at the Exeter Public Library. Mark is a volunteer for HEATHCARE-NOW! a sister organization of PNHP which supports passage of H.R. 676, the Medicare for All bill. All are encouraged to attend this public forum. "Call It Democracy" Film Showing In ExeterSun, 03/26/2006 - 2:00pm Exeter Town Hall On Sunday, March 26th 2PM at the Exeter Town Hall, The Seacoast Progressive Alliance (SPA) is showing a new film, “Call It Democracy.” All are welcome to attend. We particularly encourage area History and Social Studies teachers to encourage their students to attend. A discussion will follow the film. We have invited all area state representatives and selectmen to take part in this discussion. Call It Democracy is an historical look at the electoral process in the United States that goes far beyond the controversy of the 2000 election and the Bush v. Gore Supreme Court ruling. Call It Democracy looks into the nation’s history touching upon other close elections such as the 1960 Kennedy v. Nixon campaign, the attempt by Segregationist Third Party Candidate George Wallace to manipulate the electoral college in 1968 and the three other elections not won by popular vote prior to the 20th century. Additionally, the film explores the validity of the electoral college and contemplates the future of elections in post 2000 America, 2002’s Help America Vote Act and ramifications of electronic voting. To learn more about the film, please visit callitdemocracy.com.
