"Be wind changers," Jim Wallis tells audienceJim Wallis tells NH audiences: Creating change requires more than your vote Progressive Evangelical leader calls on NH voters to create a political movement to address poverty, AIDS, global warming
DURHAM – (Oct. 16, 2007) The Rev. Jim Wallis last night challenged people of all faiths, as well as those who consider themselves “spiritual, but not religious,” to create a movement to address the major global issues of our time, including poverty, AIDS, genocide and global warming.
Wallis told a crowd of about 200 people in Dartmouth College's Rollins Chapel Monday night that “people of faith should be the ultimate swing voters,” who use their moral compasses to evaluate candidates. But he also cautioned that regardless of where the next U.S. President stands on these issues, he or she will not be able to solve them without “a social movement pushing them from the outside to make it happen.”
“Power concedes nothing without a demand,” he said, quoting abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Portsmouth Peace/Labor Parade--1st AnnualSun, 09/23/2007 - 2:00pm Downtown Portsmouth, NH In 1902, Portsmouth celebrated its labor force with a 2000-marcher parade. Over 15,000 spectators lined the streets to applaud the trades. Then in 1905, the Seacoast welcomed the Russian and Japanese delegates to the Treaty of Portsmouth peace conference with a parade led by the New Hampshire National Guard. In 2005, for the 100th anniversary of the Treaty, the New Hampshire Air National Guard hosted a “Welcoming Parade” that honored those who serve. 2005 was also the year that the Seacoast turned out in a force of yellow t-shirts to “Save Our Shipyard” from BRAC closure. On September 23, 2007, Portsmouth will remember two grand city traditions: a salute to Labor and the tradition of commemorating the Portsmouth Peace Treaty with a public celebration in September, the month the Treaty was signed. The 2007 Labor/Portsmouth Peace Treaty Parade commemorates the Treaty of Portsmouth—the first Treaty negotiated between two foreign powers on neutral US ground, an accomplishment for which President Theodore Roosevelt earned the Nobel Peace Prize—and honors the men and women who make the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard the “gold standard’ of Shipyards as well as the Seacoast’s police, fire-fighters, teachers, nurses and others who do the same for their trades. Take a Stand DayTue, 08/28/2007 - 5:00pm Veterans Memorial Park, downtown Manchester Take a Stand Day is a national event planned as the culmination of a summer-long campaign called Iraq Summer. Iraq Summer has targeted John Sununu in New Hampshire since July 1 with a series of ongoing events aimed at keeping the Senator's summer a hot one. From delivering letters to three of his offices asking him to attend this event, during which he would face his constituents in an open forum (he hasn't responded yet), to presenting him with a report card on his Iraq voting record (abysmal), to an upcoming series of Welcome Home events, Iraq Summer New Hampshire seeks to keep people aware that Sen. Sununu has sided with the Bush Administration rather than his constituents. The campaign is organized by Americans Against Escalation in Iraq and the Campaign to Defend America, and designed to turn public opinion against the war in Iraq into political pressure on members of Congress who stand in the way of a responsible end to the war. March to ReEnergizeNH – 5 Days to Go: the Power of Walking
All of us, organizers and volunteers, are in the campaign office. Laptops, phone lists, signups on the walls, folded chairs, empty juice bottles strewn everywhere. There’s a nervous excitement in the air.
This evening – Tuesday, July 31 at 6:30pm – the March to Re-Energize New Hampshire is celebrating its kickoff in Greeley Park, at 105 Concord St. in Nashua. Granny D, no stranger to long journeys for a cause, will talk to us about the power of walking, and give her blessings as we prepare to go. Join us for the March to Re-Energize NH! March to ReEnergize NH - 6 Days Left: Farming for the future
6 days, thousands of Granite Staters from all walks of life will
gather on the State House lawn, calling for national action on global warming. You can sign up at: http://www.climatesummer.org/march You should see our office: coffee donations stacked high, green flags and green shirts, maps and laptops, the lavender walls barely showing beneath lists of our endorsers and newspaper clippings. It's not that we're messy (well, that could be true); people just keep showing at our door, asking to help – friends, neighbors, and the guy from the bagel shop downstairs. And it's not just the office that's swelling with activity – it's the whole Granite State. Now we have a bus coming from Portsmouth and carpools from Hanover. Newspapers are publishing letters from natives of Hooksett, Amherst, and Nashua daily. A woman we met at the Canterbury Fair yesterday remarked, "You guys are everywhere." It certainly feels like it – one second I'm on the phone with the Governor's secretary, and the next I'm wondering if I bought enough pancake batter for Saturday night's celebration of New Hampshire maple syrup. Amidst the hype and excitement growing all across the state, it's easy to forget why exactly Granite Staters are set on walking five full days in the first place. Sununu Gets Failing Report Card from Iraq Summer
John Sununu will be presented a report card on his Iraq votes through a press event Friday at 11 a.m. in Concord at the Lobby of the Legislative Office Building.
The grades are in on the first semester of Iraq Summer, and John Sununu has not done well. He voted against cloture, obstructing an up-or-down vote in the Senate on the Levin-Reed amendment to this year’s defense authorization bill. The amendment calls for withdrawing all troops by March 31, 2008. Sununu voted the same way for a bill that would have brought the troops home by July 1 of this year. He voted against bringing them home by the end of 2006. And he voted for giving the Bush Administration whatever money it wanted, without details on what that money bought. More than 70 percent of the American public is calling for the withdrawal of nearly all troops from Iraq by April. A recent New Hampshire poll had 65 percent of New Hampshire citizens calling for withdrawal. John Sununu has voted against his constituents’ wishes time after time.
