Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones Has Died

SOURCE: New York Times

Considered a liberal, Ms. Tubbs Jones was a co-sponsor of legislative efforts to broaden health care coverage for low- and middle-income people and of programs supporting the re-entry of convicts into their communities. She was also the author of legislation requiring certification for mortgage brokers and stiffer penalties for predatory loans.

In June, Ms. Tubbs Jones voted against emergency supplemental financing for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I feel it important that we have a plan for a timely redeployment of our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan before we continue funding what has become a seemingly endless war," she said at the time.

May she rest in peace.

DNC protester holding cells weren't fit for voting machines, but people are no problem

If you can’t stand the irony, stay out of Gitmo on the Platte.

That’s a nice little phrase I’m coining to describe the “temporary arrestee processing center” – aka vacant warehouse filled with cages and razor wire – that Denver is preparing in the event that protesters arrested during the Democratic National Convention overfill the city jails.

Another phrase I came up with today: If you can’t stand getting chased by scary black trucks, don’t try to sneak inside Gitmo on the Platte and take pictures. See the slide show here.

CBS4 first reported on the existence of the facility yesterday, capturing footage from the inside. But for some reason it didn’t disclose its exact location, except to say it was a city-owned building in northeast Denver. The same non-disclosure came from the Denver police and sheriff departments, although the mayor’s office said it will offer tours of the facility next week.

Farmington Hay Day

Sat, 08/23/2008 - 10:00am

Farmington, NH
all candidates are welcome to put their literature at the Farmington Democratic Committee booth.

Outrageous!

That's what Rick Noriega, a Democratic candidate down in Texas thinks about the Iraqi failure to use their own oil revenues to rebuild what U.S. bombing has destroyed. What is he thinking?

The same thing as Senator Levin, it seems. The latter, having more regular access to the TV, gets to share this stupid opinion with the whole world. I can just see people shaking their heads all over, wondering what's gotten into the Americans. After all, we used to have a reputation for being practical and practical people don't start rebuilding while their neighborhood is still being bombed.

Bob Bruce for Executive council in District 4!

Send a Neighbor, not a Career Politician to the Council

The Presidential candidates are talking about bringing change to Washington, It’s time to bring change to District 4 !!!

I am running because I believe that District 4 deserves a positive, efficient and proactive Executive Councilor representing them. This campaign is about bringing independent leadership, efficiency, and accountability to Concord on behalf of the people in District 4 and the people of the state of New Hampshire.

Whether you live in District 4 or not, all decisions made by the Executive Council affect YOU!

My priorities include:

  • Developing transportation and highway plans that are viable for NH and that protect our Environment, including public transportation such as Light rail and Bus service
  • Ensuring that the needs of our children and their education are not based on political outcomes
  • Ensuring that the Executive Council secures contracts with responsible employers who will hire NH workers
  • Working to change the State Bid process so that Companies wishing to do business with the State Of New Hampshire, have to state the percentage of New Hampshire workers they will employ, and the benefits that they will provide them, should they receive the contract.

Obama to Make Call to Expand Bush's Faith-Based Programs

SOURCE: Wall Street Journal

Associated Press, July 1, 2008 9:02 a.m.

CHICAGO -- Reaching out to evangelical voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is announcing plans to expand President Bush's program steering federal social service dollars to religious groups and -- in a move sure to cause controversy -- support some ability to hire and fire based on faith.

Sen. Obama was unveiling his approach to getting religious charities more involved in government anti-poverty programs during a tour and remarks Tuesday in Zanesville, Ohio, at Eastside Community Ministry, which provides food, clothes, youth ministry and other services.

" The challenges we face today ... are simply too big for government to solve alone," Sen. Obama was to say, according to a prepared text of his remarks obtained by the Associated Press. "We need all hands on deck."

Feingold stands apart in defending Constitution: will filibuster FISA

WEDNESDAY 25 JUNE 2008

by: Amy Goodman, Democracy Now!

In an interview with Amy Goodman, Senator Russ Feingold said he would filibuster the FISA bill.

It's being described as the most significant revision of the nation's surveillance law in three decades. The Senate is preparing to vote on rewriting the nation's Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and giving immunity to phone companies involved in President Bush's secret domestic spy program. We speak with Senator Russ Feingold (D–WI), who has been the leading congressional voice against the Bush administration's warrantless spy program since it was exposed nearly three years ago.

Obama Bans DNC from Taking Lobbyists' Money

SOURCE: NPR, by Peter Overby

Morning Edition, June 6, 2008 · Presumptive presidential nominee Barack Obama, exerting his new power as leader of his party, has told the Democratic National Committee to eschew all contributions from Washington lobbyists and political action committees.

Obama has spurned money from lobbyists and PACs ever since he declared himself a candidate for president. On Thursday, he extended that policy to the DNC.

Speaking in Bristol, Va., he told a cheering crowd: "We will not take a dime from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACs. We're going to change how Washington works. They will not fund my party. They will not run our White House. And they will not drown out the voice of the American people when I'm president of the United States of America."

Obama also dispatched a close adviser, consultant Paul Tewes, to the DNC; he'll work with chairman Howard Dean, who keeps his job.

Bob Bruce to file for Executive council in District 4

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Thursday June 5, 2008

Bob Bruce for Executive Council (District 4)

bobbruce.org

Bob bruce ( D-Candia) will be filing for Executive Council District Four on Tuesday June 10th at 1 PM, NH Secretary of State Office, State House, Concord.

The Presidential candidates are talking about bringing change to Washington, I say it’s time to bring change to District 4.

I am running because I believe that District 4 deserves a positive, efficient and proactive Executive Councilor representing them. This campaign is about bringing independent leadership, efficiency, and accountability to Concord on behalf of the people in District 4 and the people of the state of New Hampshire.

My priorities include developing transportation and highway plans that are viable for NH and that protect our environment, including public transportation such as Light rail and Bus service. Additionally, ensuring that the needs of our children and their education are not based on political outcomes, and that the Executive Council secures contracts with responsible employers who will hire NH workers.

The responsibilities of the Executive Council include making crucial decisions that affect all of the citizens of NH. The issues are complex and require common sense and an ability to understand the long-term impact of its decisions. The issues we face are New Hampshire issues not political ones and I plan on working with state leadership in moving a Pro-NH agenda forward.

Agenda items coming before the Council are leaning more toward technology, such as the new computer systems for the Department of Education, technology issues within the Department of Safety, Medicaid management, and new technologies for our first line of defense, Police and Fire departments.

I believe my more than two decades of working in the technology sector and more than a decade of technology experience with law enforcement gives me the practical experience to make the best decisions for upgrading NH’s technological systems.

My professional experiences provide me with the ability to evaluate the expertise of the individuals coming before the Executive Council including Judges, appointments to the Executive Branch, Commissioners, Department Heads, or Citizen Members. I will ensure that they put the needs of NH residents first, not those of special interests.

I want the citizens of District 4, my prospective employers, to know that running for Executive Councilor is the most important job interview of my career. I feel that my varied life experiences are a great fit for the position I seek.

However, it is the voters, who will determine whether my life experiences and passion for a better New Hampshire qualify me to represent them in Concord.
