Democracy in Action conference to boost your knowledge and sharpen your skills

Sat, 11/18/2006 - 9:30am

NHTI Concord
While many of us are thinking about the important election on Nov. 7, candidates for president are already thinking about 2008. So are we at the American Friends Service Committee. Please join us in Concord on Saturday, Nov. 18, for the Democracy in Action conference to boost your knowledge and sharpen your skills. Please see the details below and mark your datebooks.

And please be aware that the Bush Administration still intends to push the Peru-US Free Trade Agreement (yes, some are calling it PUFTA) through the Congress during the “lame duck” session. It is urgent that we raise our voices NOW to stop this from happening. If you see candidates for President or Congress between now and Election Day, here’s a suggested question:

According to a recent study by the Economic Policy Institute (www.epinet.org), New Hampshire is the 10th hardest hit state in terms of job losses resulting from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). EPI says that job affects in Mexico and Canada have also been negative. The Bush Administration has recently completed a new NAFTA-style agreement with Peru, which it intends to bring before Congress during the lame duck session. Do you think it is appropriate for Congress to consider such highly controversial proposals during a lame duck session? Will oppose or support the Administration's "free trade" agreements?

Candidate Training - This Weekend!

Calling all local candidates! Please join us this weekend for a special candidate training geared specifically to your needs.

RSVP to political@democracyfornewhampshire.com

Please note that this training is offered free of charge and is open to current, future, and potential candidates...

*****************************************************************

Democracy for New Hampshire is pleased to announce its second candidate training, which will take place on Sunday, February 12th from 2-6pm in Concord. On the local level, people who run for office take on the role not just of candidate, but also of campaign manager, communications director, volunteer mobilizer... and everything else! DFNH candidate training recognizes this reality and seeks to give candidates the skills and framework they need to mount a winning grassroots campaign.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 12th
2:00-6:00pm
West Street Ward House
41 West Street (corner of West & Badger)
Concord, NH

The training consists of three major components: developing a campaign plan, honing your message, and communicating with voters. The goal is for candidates to leave with three tangible products: a personalized campaign plan; a press release or literature for mailing; and a phone or door-knocking script. The afternoon will culminate in a "Candidate Night" simulation, where candidates will practice the skills they've learned throughout the evening by giving a brief presentation and responding to questions and answers from an audience of "concerned citizens."
