Attack of the porn spammers

For the past couple of days we've been dealing with an assault from Web site spammers. We've taken some technical measures to try to block them and have deleted several dozen user accounts from the Web site. I think these were all spammer accounts, but if you had a legitimate account that we deleted accidentally, please recreate your account and accept our apologies.

Likewise, if you come across any inappropriate detritus from these...people on our Web site, please report it to webmaster@democracyfornewhampshire.com and again, please accept our apologies.

ListenUp: NH now has a direct feed to DFNH website

Now on the DFNH website, you have direct access to ListenUp: NH! The ListenUp mission as stated on their website is:

ListenUp: NH has been created to reduce the attention problem for down-ballot candidates and early-stage candidates for major offices in New Hampshire. We are producing and hosting short videos of bona fide candidates speaking on diverse topics. Whether it's a speech intended to introduce the candidate to the voters or a detailed discussion on an issue of public importance, ListenUp: NH is providing all of the technical resources required to produce and distribute high-quality candidate videos. By aggregating candidate videos in one place and actively promoting the Web site, we will greatly increase the number of voters that candidates are able to reach with their messages.

Just look down on the left side of the DFNH website, and click to view and listen to NH candidates of every political stripe!

Following a series of mistakes and missteps that would have seemed funny if they were happening to someone else, the DFNH Web site is back in business on our shiny new server hardware. (Dual core AMD Athlon 64, 2 GB RAM, two 250 GB SATA drives in a RAID 1 configuration, and Ubuntu Linux 5.10 x86_64, if you care.)

Earlier today I accidentally brought the site up using a week-old backup of the database. I understand our esteemed Membership Director, Nancy Tobi, took some grief for this, so let me be clear that this mess was my fault, not hers.

I've restored the site from a backup taken today, Sunday, April 9 at 1:20 PM, just before the old server went away. Sorry for all the confusion and inconvenience.

Posting content to the DFNH website

To post content (after logging in as a website user):
1. On the top left side of the website click where it says "Create Content." This opens a new page where you can choose the type of content you want to post.
2. Choose the type of content you wish to post (for example, Event, Story, etc.)
3. Click on the type of content you wish to post (on the top left or in the middle of the page that opens, either is fine)
4. Enter content information (for Events, make sure you enter the title, location, date, time, details)
5. Click "Preview" to make sure it reads okay
6. Click "Submit"
7. The posting is sent to a submission queue so it doesn't appear automatically. Do not enter the event again just because you don't immediately see it. Typically you will see it within 12 hours of posting.

Charlie Friou brought up the issues of member privacy and consent on the dfanh-org mailing list. This goes to the heart of something I've been thinking about for several days: What privacy guarantees should we make to DfNH members, and what permissions should we ask for when they sign up?

Here's an outline of the privacy policy and permissions I propose.
