In depth examination of how civil liberties affect real people everyday

PETERBOROUGH --- During first week in September, as the House and Senate versions of the Patriot Act go to conference to create a final bill to be presented to President Bush, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and award-winning producer/director Robert Greenwald will commence an unprecedented new 10-part series entitled The ACLU Freedom Files. The series premier episode, "Beyond The Patriot Act," will be screened on Wednesday, September 7th at 7:00 pm at the Peterborough Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 25 Main Street in Peterborough.

"Beyond The Patriot Act” highlights the importance of this legislation and urges members of Congress to take the time to act sensibly and bring the law back in line with the Constitution by restoring proper checks and balances.

The ACLU Freedom Files, in ten 30-minute episodes, will explore pressing issues that are threatening the civil liberties of all Americans, regardless of political affiliation. “As we experienced in Peterborough Town Meeting a few years ago, interest in the civil liberties issue extends beyond party politics” said John Friede, who helped to spearhead the successful town resolution in defense of the bill of rights and organized the screening.

Film screening: The Soldier's Heart - part of Swing the Vote film series

Upon returning home after participating in combat, a soldier’s physical injuries may often mask disturbing problems that lie beneath the surface. They have been taught how to survive on the battlefield, but often find it extremely challenging to live with themselves afterwards.

Volunteer political committee Swing the Vote continues its video series “Building real national security – the alternatives to war” with another challenging film in the hope of spurring community discourse on important matters related to the war in Iraq. The event is free and open to the general public.

“The Soldier’s Heart” explores the psychological cost of war and investigates whether the military is doing enough to help the many combat veterans coming come with emotional problems. With unprecedented access to active duty members at Camp Pendleton, a Marine base in San Diego, and through interviews with mental health experts, this Frontline production uncovers one of the underreported stories from the war in Iraq.

Film Screening: Bush’s Brain -- part of Swing the Vote film series

While recent national focus on the leaking of a covert operative’s name has shifted to efforts to fill an opening in the Supreme Court, many still question what role White House Senior Advisor Karl Rove plays in important decisions that affect their lives.

Volunteer political committee Swing the Vote continues its video series “Building real national security – the alternatives to war” with a hard look at the man President Bush calls "turd blossom." The event is free and open to the general public.

According to film critic Matt Dentler, “ ‘Bush’s Brain’ is not about being a Republican or a Democrat. It’s about living in a nation where the power may be in the hands of people with questionable intentions… it’s an absorbing documentary, a portrait of media in need of answers and a country in need of more questions.”

Directors Michael Paradies Shoob and Joseph Mealey film, produced “Bush’s Brain” during last year’s heated election contest. The film has drawn new interest as the public seeks to better understand the Valerie Plame Wilson case which, according to a document released by Rep. Henry Waxman on July 22nd, involves eleven separate reported national security breaches.
