Vote Smart

10/22/04

To New Hampshire voters:

And so another election season is upon us. The sound bites offered lately by the Republican Party are that Americans are not secure. The message is very clear - as an American, you need to fear for your security, for your family, for your lives. The reason President Bush is using tactics such as these is because this message of fear works. People feel more secure when they believe they can be defended by weaponry. The president is catering to a phantom that lives in the heads of voters, especially those who feel vulnerable.

I urge New Hampshire voters not to buy into this message of fear. You are an educated people. You do not have to buy into the idea that our future will be one where our leaders will always be keeping us safe with big guns and smart bombs. Now there’s an oxymoron – a smart bomb - another catchy phrase. Smart bombs kill innocent people. They’re not that smart. You are.

Don’t vote because you fear for your lives. Vote smart. Inform yourselves. Discover the true experience of what it means to be at war with a culture that does not understand why it is under attack and occupied. I don’t think you (or anyone else in this country ) would appreciate a smart bomb landing in your yard! Why do you think an Iraqi should have to witness such an encounter? Mistakes have been made by President Bush. You elect him in November and you give him the green light to make another big mistake. It’s your tax dollars at work. The picture isn’t pretty.

Sincerely,

Bob Moore

Think critically

What amazes me continually is how smart people consume propoganda and campaign slogans. Who really believes that any sitting president would not have gone to war following 9/11? But there are those who say a President Gore wouldn't have defended us. The question is not whether or not we would have gone to war, it is how, where, and when. Intelligent people in NH like to talk about how if you elect Democrats they will tax you and spend your money. Well DUH. So will Republicans. Running a government costs money, and so does running a society. If you want to go the Benson way and slash spending by ousting people from nursing homes and medicaid benefits, then you will pay in another way, through increased insurance costs when all those people end up in the emergency rooms. Or in losing your job because you need to stay home to take care of your elderly parents. It's time to not only vote smart, but to start thinking smart. I heard Judd Gregg on the debate with Granny D. Everyone in NH loves Judd Gregg. He's supposed to be such an independent-minded Granite Stater. I listened to him. He mostly spoke the party line propoganda, didn't answer the questions, and patronized his opponent. It's time to open our minds and forget about Democrat and Republican. Nader is right about one thing: most of them are the same. They are bought and sold by corporate America, they are evasive and when they do speak it's in platitudes and propoganda. Granny D was right, and so was Howard Dean, and so was Gordon Millar, Aaron Lavallee, Andy Roeper, and all the other new candidates. It's time for new people to start running things, and for all of us to stop talking like campaign commercials and start having some real discourse.
