The DFNH Dozen

At a DFNH organizing meeting in Concord we agreed to define a "DFNH Dozen"—twelve or so candidates for state and local offices that DFNH will support in the current election cycle. You can nominate and discuss candidates for the DFNH Dozen on our Web site.

The deadline for nominations is 12:01 AM on Wednesday, July 28, 2004. The DFNH Board of Directors and Coordinators Council will meet Sunday, August 15, 2004 to interview candidates. The DFNH Dozen will be announced at our kick-off event in late August.

Martha Pike for Dist 5

Martha Pike is running for State Representative from Carroll County District 5. Martha will be the first Democrat to run from this area in recent memory. She and her late husband John Pike were among the first champions of Governor Dean and were instrumental in bringing him to Brookfield, NH to speak at the Brookfield Town House. Governor Dean’s speech inspired many of us to become politically active, including Martha. She is running as “A New Voice” in hopes of healing the divisions and paralysis in our state legislature. She wants to reduce the growing deficit and promote legislation that will move New Hampshire forward in the areas of education, the environment, and health care. A vote for Martha Pike is a vote for positive, progressive change to better the lives of ordinary New Hampshirites. For more information about Martha go to www.moosemtndems.org.

2 Great Candidates

I would like to propose 2 candidates for State Rep, Chris Hamm for District 7 (Hopkinton, Warner, Webster) and Aaron Lavallee for District 5 (Henniker, Bradford). Aaron is well known to many Dean supporters in the primary race, as he coordinated our efforts in several local towns. At 24, he is a vibrant, smart, well-spoken and tough contender who has a very bright future ahead of him in NH politics.

Chris is running as an incumbent for her second election in Hopkinton, and has been very active in town politics and has been an outspoken supporter of women's and environmental issues. She has given enormous amounts of time and energy to local issues, and is unafraid to go up against the house Republican majority. Below are paragraphs prepared by her campaign:

In her first session, Chris has proven herself in a number of ways: as a first-term representative to the Democratic Leadership team; as a member of the influential Ways and Means Committee; and as an articulate spokesperson for both fair legislation and fair legislative process. In speaking in her committee and on the floor of the House about such major issues as education funding and the separation of executive, legislative, and judicial powers, she has gained recognition and earned respect from both Democrats and Republicans alike.

Chris has also represented her constituents well, responding to their concerns and achieving a 100% score from the New Hampshire Citizens Alliance for her record on several key votes in the areas of economic, environmental, political and social justice. She has co-sponsored and testified for legislation in several areas, including continued funding for the Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (L-CHIP), to enable the town of Hopkinton to purchase state-owned land at a reasonable price, to empower Newbury residents in their choice of sites for Lake Sunapee boat access, and to limit lead and mercury emissions from Contoocook's BioEnergy plant.

As she did in 2002, Chris is again running on a platform of "Common Sense Leadership," in the belief that it is in New Hampshire's best interest to meet its obligation to provide an adequate education for all its children, to care for its growing elderly population as well as those citizens least able to care for themselves, to understand the need for environmental vigilance, to protect a woman's right to choose, and to respect the dignity of all citizens, no matter their race, creed or sexual orientation. She notes that in the past session there have been several times when a few, or even one vote, has made a difference. It's this kind of difference that makes support for Chris Hamm so important.

Elizabeth Sanders

DFNH Dozen Candidate

I would like to nominate current Republican State Representative from District 13 (Exeter, Stratham and North Hampton) Carl Robertson to the DFNH Dozen.

Rep. Robertson has voted in support of reproductive choice, civil unions, campaign finance reform, groundwater conservation, and funding social services. He received an 80% rating from the NHCAA in their 2003 Voter Guide.

He has called for an investigation into the transfer of two Department of Environmental Services employees who dared to bring enforcement actions against Gov. Craig Benson and DES Commissioner Michael Nolin.

The Exeter Town Democratic Committee has left an open slot to engineer a write-in campaign for Carl on the Democratic side of the ticket to help improve his chances. At a recent SPA meeting, he received great praise and applause from those 40 people in attendance.

Carl is an example of why we want to state and act on the "non-partisan" part of our mission statement.

Two More DFNH Candidates

Eileen Flockhart is running again for State Rep in District 13. She was the highest "losing" vote getter in the last election.

Eileen is a core member of the Seacoast Progressive Alliance and is a very hard campaigner. She recently retired from teaching special students in the Dover school system. I have personally known Eileen for about 15 years, and know that she believes in the values expressed in the SPA and DFNH Mission Statements.

"Maggie" Wood Hassan is also repeating her 2002 attempt to win a state senate seat. She entered the race late in the political season last time, but still fared quite well against a seriously right-wing Republican candidate, Russell Prescott. She has a very disciplined and organized campaign this time, and expects to win.

Maggie is an attorney in Exeter and has participated in numerous SPA and other Seacoast events. She is a tireless campaigner for affordable health care, women's right to choice, and support of programs for those among us in the greatest need. The issues are close and personal for Maggie and her husband, Tom...as they have a teen-age son with CP.

Dan Allen

I would like to nominate Dan Allen, who is running for the NH House as a Democrat in the district that includes New London, Wilmot, and Danbury. He has served on the Kearsarge Regional School Board. Dan takes public service very seriously and is very conscientious. At the moment he is campaigning by going door to door and hopes to cover as much of the district as he can.

Holderness Area

I nominate Jennifer Mitchell, who will be running for the NH Legislature this fall in the Holderness area. She will bring energy and organization to the effort to revitalize the New Hampshire Democratic Party.

Maggie Hassan for NH Senate

I would recommend Maggie because she is progressive and her opponent is Prescott.

Dean NH Dozen

I would like to nominate two wonderful candidates who were not only instrumental in the Dean for New Hampshire campaign, but were inspired by Governor Dean to run. McKim Mitchell in Senate District 10 and Sid Das of Hudson who is running for the House.

Please go to www.nhsenatedemocrats.org for more information on McKim, and please contact me for more information on Sid. I can be reached at mini@nhsenatedemocrats.org

Thanks!
Mini

Dean Dozen

Hi ,
I am runing for State Sen in Dist 6 currently held by Dick Green. I'd like to send my bio in as a progressive candidate. To whom do I sent it to? Marlene DeChane Barrington. I served 4 terms in the House from Barrington and was a sponsor of the anti dis. bill for sexual orientation in 1997 which passed and became law in 1998.

Candidates

Marlene,

Welcome! Please send an email to our candidate coordinator.

Good luck with your campaign.

-- Roger

How and when do we decide?

I suspect we will have numerous candidates to work with this year. When do we want to select our dozen, and according to which criteria?

peace and blessings,
nancy

how do we decide

I'd propose this comes in two phases: phase one, by June 11th, involves identifying a dozen Dean supporters who are candidates this year in the state of NH and who will also support DfNH. Phase two involves endorsement by DfNH of all or some of these candidates, based on methodology to be determined. Endorsements by Labor Day? Or whenever we think it would be most helpful.

Three from Herb Moyer

DfNH,

Please add the names of Eileen Flockhart, and Marlowe Bergendoff as
candidates to the NH House of Representatives. Add the name of Maggie
Hassan as a NH Senate candidate from this Exeter. Stratham, North
Hampton District also. We are working on the other 6 slots we have
available (we have had two people initially indicate they would run only to later change their minds).

Regards,

Herb

details from the dean NH dozen

would like to propose that we should ask each candidate to agree to be highlighted by us, and to provide a brief bio, information about the race they are entering, and why Dean mattered to their decision to run. Also, contact information about their campaign (snail mail address, email, and website, if one exists). Is this OK? Anything else?

More info

Anything else?

We need their initial impressions about how we could be most helpful to them. (Canvassers? Publicity? House parties? Tech?)

issues

we also need to know what issues they are running on or wish to "speak truthfully" about.

peace and blessings,
nancy

Here's one from Lebanon...

Gene Andersen - he's running for State Rep from Lebanon, has been an active participant in our meet-ups, was inspired by the Gov to run this year, plans on running a door-to-door, neighbor-to-neighbor campaign...
