TROUBLE THE WATER FILM OPENING - THE TRUE STORY OF KATRINA

Hey DFA New Hampshire Family -

I am excited to introduce a new film, Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner TROUBLE THE WATER. I can say with complete confidence that it is not only a beautifully made film, it also carries a powerful message that is sure to inspire and activate all who see it. Film is a powerful organizing tool and I am reaching out to communities across the country to lift up issues of racial, social and economic justice, using film to inspire dialogue and action.

We open at the Red River Theater on October 3 and I would love your help spreading the word to your networks. I promise you won’t be disappointed, all those who struggle for peace and justice will benefit from using this film to inspire action. I have been working with organizations across the country, using this film to inspire and mobilize communities, especially important these next few weeks. I am sure you remember it was Bush’s response to Katrina, or lack thereof, that caused his numbers to plummet and I am working as hard as I can to remind people that a McCain presidency, along with countless other disasters, would continue these same horrible policies. Check out the photograph with Bush and McCain smiling and celebrating. (link below) This was taken on the day Katrina hit New Orleans, showing as plain as day the lack of concern these two had as 1000’s of our brothers and sisters lost their homes, and many their lives. I know you will be moved to encourage those in your realm of influence to support our openings as we continue our national theatrical rollout. (see below for more info) I will also include a sample e-blast, please help spread this to all local networks.

TROUBLE THE WATER is an inspiring story about a young African American couple who survive not only deadly floodwaters, armed soldiers, and bungling bureaucrats, but also a system that has failed them. This film shines a bright light on the struggles central to the work of social justice, and is a powerful means to inspire our communities into action. At its heart, TROUBLE THE WATER is about empowerment. Audiences will leave the theater resolved to take action and I hope you will use this film's theatrical opening to generate action around issues of racial justice, income inequality, and community mobilization.

Thanks for your help - spread the word! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Thank you!

Dear Friend,

After playing to sold out crowds in New York, Chicago, New Orleans, DC and Atlanta, the award-winning film Trouble the Water opens this Friday October 3rd at Red River Theater in Concord, New Hampshire.

The film tells an extraordinary story of one family's survival of the flooding of New Orleans after Katrina, and their journey into a new life. Time Magazine's Richard Corliss called it "An endlessly moving, artlessly magnificent tribute to people the government didn't think worth saving," And Manohla Dargis of The New York Times called it "...one of the best American documentaries in recent memory."

Directed and produced by Fahrenheit 9/11 producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal and executive produced by Danny Glover, Trouble the Water won the 2008 Sundance Grand Jury Prize and has been heralded by critics:

"Trouble the Water" is a crucial film, one of the best of the decade."
-- Joe Williams, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"Four Stars...extraordinary."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"...celebrates the resiliency of the human spirit."
-- Miki Turner, Essence

"...an utterly magnificent film, one that is as hard to forget as it is to
ignore."
-- Mike Scott, New Orleans Times-Picayune

The success of Trouble the Water over the weekend will determine how long the film will play at your local theater, and how many other communities throughout the country will have a chance to see the film.
