Film synopsis: Taxi to the Dark Side (2008/USA/Dir: Alex Gibney/107 min/Jigsaw Productions) tells the story of a young taxi driver who was arrested in 2002 by the American military while carrying passengers in a deserted area of Afghanistan. He was taken to Bagram Air Base and found dead five days later. The mystery surrounding Dilawar's death by beating provided the basis for the documentary made by Australian producer Eva Orner and writer-director Alex Gibney, a journalist turned filmmaker. Taxi to the Dark Side coolly and impartially shows the chain of decisions and policies post-9/11 from the White House and the Pentagon that sent the US down the path of violating not only the Geneva Convention, but also US law and international law in defining torture and detention practices for terrorist suspects. The film raises powerful questions about what these policies might mean for the future of what most Americans hold to be one our founding moral principles: justice. (Advisory: the film includes graphic photographs) WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: ** A riveting masterpiece! Unforgettable! Hands-down the best documentary of the year. An unmissable film. -Scott Hoffman, MoviePictureFilm.com ** Few documentaries have mounted as persuasive an argument as Taxi to the Dark Side. It is a devastating account of detainees killed, soldiers corrupted and principles abandoned. It should be required viewing for anyone who thinks that torture should be part of the military arsenal. -Daniel Eagan, Film Journal International Read about Taxi to the Dark Side at: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/taxi_to_the_dark_side/ To purchase tickets online, visit us at http://www.redrivertheatres.org/box_events.php |
