CONCORD - Gov. John Lynch today encouraged New Hampshire residents to nominate their fellow citizens for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's "Above and Beyond Citizen Honors."

The annual awards recognize and honor three civilian Americans who have made a difference in the lives of others through an act of heroism, or through a continued commitment to putting others before themselves.

"Here in New Hampshire, we are surrounded by everyday heroes who commit selfless acts in an effort to make our state a better place to work and live," Gov. Lynch said. "I invite the citizens of this state to take a moment to recognize friends or neighbors who put the needs of others first by nominating them for the 'Above and Beyond Citizen Honors.'"

One finalist will be chosen from every state. Of the 50 finalists, three will be chosen to receive the "Above and Beyond Citizen Honors" during a ceremony in Washington D.C. on March 25, 2008. The ceremony will be hosted by Brian Williams of NBC News and will be televised nationally on March 30.

Former U.S. Secretary of State and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin Powell, and Presidents William Jefferson Clinton and George H.W. Bush are co-chairs of the event and will take part in the televised event.
