Support Senate Amendment to Stop NAFTA Trucks!
The Bush administration is at it again -- ignoring public safety in order to open up the border to Mexico-based trucks in a NAFTA "demonstration project." The only thing this project demonstrates is utter disregard for the safety and well-being of everyone driving and riding American highways.
Congress left very clear instructions for the Bush administration, among them not to allow any such pilot program to begin until the states were ready to enforce safety standards against any Mexico-based trucks that violate them. But a Department of Transportation Inspector General report admits that five states are not ready to enforce safety standards... and even more aren't in a position yet to enforce "cabotage" restrictions which are supposed to keep the Mexico-based trucks from picking up and delivering packages from point to point to point within the U.S. The House already passed an amendment to the spending bill for the Department of Transportation that would close the door to this dangerous plan. Now, Senator Dorgan is offering the same amendment in the Senate. Tell the Senate to put the brakes on the NAFTA trucks pilot project... by supporting the Dorgan amendment.
