CONCORD — "Granny D" is back on the ballot.
Democratic Senate candidate Doris Haddock has legally changed her middle name to "Granny D," and is therefore requesting her name appear as Doris Granny D Haddock on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.
With the primary less than a month away on Sept. 14, there was not enough time to make the change on those ballots. However, Haddock is not facing any challengers in the Democratic primary.
Last month, the state Ballot Law Commission voted 4-1 to prohibit the 94-year-old Haddock from using the moniker she is known by across the country. In its ruling, the commission felt the name "Granny D" invoked a political statement, violating the spirit of the law which forbids "electioneering" on the ballot.
