The purpose of the films is to bring awareness of and education to the public of certain controversial or underreported topics which have not been explored, debated or fully revealed as truthful information by the mainstream media, organizations or the government. The popular film series, 'Confronting the Issues' will present Sunday, April 15, "The Power of Community." When Cuba lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1990s, the country faced an immediate crisis - feeding the population & an ongoing challenge: how to create a new low-energy society. Cuba transformed from large, fossil-fuel intensive farming to small, less energy-intensive organic farms and urban gardens, and from a highly industrial society to a more sustainable one. This film tells the story of the Cuban people's hardship, ingenuity and triumph over sudden adversity - through cooperation, conservation and community, told in their own words. It provides a valuable example of how to successfully address the challenge of reducing our energy use. Recently UNH Office of Sustainability professors visited Cuba to study their innovative techniques. The film on Sunday, April 15 will be presented as a followup to the April 14 event: Step It Up 2007: The National Day of Climate Action on the Milford Oval, another 26 NH towns and over 1300 nationally. Various area participants will help lead a discussion after the film. ### |
