Today, CongresswomanCarol Shea-Porter released the following response to a recent press release by NewHampshire Republican Party Chair Fergus Cullen. In the release, Cullen alleges that in a recent speech Shea-Porter "question(ed) 'freedom and liberty' as American values worth fighting for." No such statement appears in her speech.

STATEMENT

It is outrageous that a political functionary, Fergus Cullen, has questioned my patriotism inverting and distorting my words in my recent speech on the Iraq war. This is a deliberate misrepresentation, and he demeans the democratic process and stains the reputation of his own party.

After listening to hours of debate on Iraq in the past few days, I find it both ironic and deeply distressing that some politicians who continue to support the President's war, who stood silently while our troops went into battle without the proper equipment, and those who - in the vast majority - did not serve their country - are the same ones who use the sacred words "freedom" and "liberty" to paper over their own failures to provide oversight.

Romanticizing the War

As a Carol Shea-Porter volunteer and supporter, i can say with certainty that Carol's unscripted commments regarding the war were just that, unscripted. No malice was intended of course. She is decent and honorable. Many times, websites like truthout.org report a slanted account of the truth,

If you listen to Vietnam Vets like Duncan Hunter (and his son), freedom and liberty for citizens, Iraqi or American, are precisely the reasons they are fighting in Iraq.

Duncan Hunter (R-CA), Todd Akin (R-MO), and Joe Wilson (R-SC), are all fathers with sons serving in combat. Perhaps that soldier Carol saw walking down the ramp was one of their sons. What would she tell this soldier?

Your mission is not essential to our security. Your mission is a misallocation of resources better spent in afghanistan. Should you die in Iraq, you will die for goals I don't support, yet won't try to stop.

"I support you. I support you by making sure that you'll never get sent to a war again." I guess my only question is - What if there isn't another tour of duty?

Liberty and freedom are precisely what our soldiers are fighting for in Iraq, and millions of Iraqi citizens over there would tell Carol that, should she visit.
