Greasing the Wheels of Change

Durham
Despite making up only 5 % of the world's population, the US has a 25.5% share of the world's oil consumption. Two-thirds of US oil consumption is utilized by the transportation sector. For every gallon of gas burned about 25 pounds of CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere. These emissions are responsible for global warming, while the release of other pollutants associated with the transportation sector can create human health problems and lead to species extinction.

Free yourself from fossil fuels this Election Day and join students from the University of New Hampshire as they utilize alternative modes of transportation to get to the polls. On Tuesday, November 7th, 2007, various student organizations and individuals will join together to provide more sustainable transportation options in order to exercise our right to vote. The options will include: mass transit, biodiesel and vegetable oil fueled cars, bicycles, and feet.

We understand that oil consumption is a problem, creating global conflict between civilizations and damaging fragile ecosystems through the effects of global warming. We are committed to exploring and demonstrating effective solutions, and are asking the same of our policy makers.

Demonstrations of alternative fueled vehicles that are running on biodiesel and vegetable oil, converted with the Greasecar vegetable fuel system will occur at the polls.

Durham Polls are at Oyster River High School and are open from 8am-7pm.
