Several leading political figures, including George Bush, Tony Blair, John McCain, and Senate Energy Committee chair Pete Domenici are making the case for nuclear power as a central solution to the world’s projected 50 percent increase in energy demand over the coming 25 years.

The Bush administration is requesting a FY2007 budget of $250 million to begin development of a major new nuclear energy initiative, the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP), which involves the reprocessing of the spent fuel from nuclear power reactors to extract plutonium which can be used to fuel reactors.

In May, the House Appropriations Committee slashed the administration's request to $120 million, teeing up a showdown in the Senate where support for GNEP is greater. The Senate Appropriations Committee begins markup of the Department of Energy budget, including GNEP, in mid-July.
