Tuesday April 4th: Senate hearing on construction & demolition billTue, 04/04/2006 - 3:15pm Room 102 , Legislative Office Building, Concord This week NH was cited as having the highest incidence of asthma in the nation. Please help convince the NH Senate that they should care about the quality of the air we breathe. Industry would like to open our state to incineration of construction and demolition debris (C&D). If this happens NH will become the dumping ground for C&D from across the Northeast. Emissions from C&D incineration will pour tons of mercury, lead, dioxins, arsenic, and other toxins into our air - further poisoning our already compromised environment. On Tuesday the Senate's Energy and Economic Development Committee heard HB1433 a bill to study secure land fills that includes an amendment to extend the moratorium on C&D incineration for another 18 months. DES Commissioner Nolin testified in favor of extending the moratorium as did a representative from the Governor's Office. The room was packed with people supporting the bill. Only one person, Rep. Roy Maxfield of Loudon, testified against the bill. HOWEVER - industry lobbyists are busy working behind the scenes to get Senators to oppose protective legislation. The Committee is expected to vote next week. Next Tuesday April 4th at 3:15 in room 102 in the Legislative Office Building this committee will hear HB1534. This bill, which was passed overwhelmingly by the House, would maintain the designation of C&D as a solid waste. HB1534 is in response to the Dept. of Environmental Services' plan to redesignate C&D as a "waste derived product" which would remove EPA and other regulatory protections and make it easier for industries to pollute. Please plan to attend the hearing.
Please ask friends and colleagues, especially in Republican districts, to call
their Senators to support both HB1433 as amended and HB1534 maintaining C&D
designation as a solid waste. NH voters need to ask their elected officials
to care more about public health than they do about
