Equal insurance rights for extremely ill students (aka Michelle's Law)

Please visit http://www.michelleslaw.com to learn more about this bill and consider sending a letter to your representative about this important issue.

Dear Representative:
I am writing to urge you to support NH HB 37 (Michelle’s Law), an act relative to health insurance coverage for full-time students on medical leaves of absence.

I was alarmed to learn that when a college student becomes ill or injured and is forced to leave school, their health insurance is terminated. HB 37 bill would remedy this situation by extending health insurance coverage for full-time college students who find themselves in this tragic situation.

Currently, college students who face serious illness or injury will lose their health insurance if their medical condition requires them to withdraw from classes or leave their institution. A seriously ill or injured college student should not be forced to undermine their health or compromise their medical treatments by continuing to take classes against the orders of their physician, simply to maintain their insurance.

In addition to losing health insurance for the child, parents of an ill or injured college student face other significant financial challenges. If the parents stay home to care for their child, their reduced income puts a financial strain on the family. If the family also faces the high cost of COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) premiums to obtain some medical coverage, the financial burden is even greater.

I urge you to make the right choice by supporting HB 37. Please help assure New Hampshire families that their child will maintain the health insurance they’ve paid into if they are unable to continue taking a full class load to an illness or injury.

I encourage you to read more about HB 37 at www.michelleslaw.com.

When you read Michelle’s story you will find that she and other New Hampshire families need your help. Please vote to pass HB 37, Michelle’s Law.

Sincerely,

(Your name)
