NH Independent Voter website launched
NHINDEPENDENTS.ORG is a new site for New Hampshire's Independent voters.
Established to help fight H.B. 154, which would make it more difficult for Independents to participate in NH Presidential primaries, it is hoped that in the long run the website will help spawn a community of independents to wield more effective political power. The site has links to in-state and national Indepenent movement resources, including NHCIV - the New Hampshire Committee for an Independent Voice. Despite being courted by both parties in the 2004 Presidential election, Independents are largely ignored after the campaigns. And they are effectively locked out of participation in the NH Legislature and the corridors of power in Congress, unless they choose to join one of the major parties. Chances of uniting Independents into a cohesive block or party may be unlikely, since they're a pretty independent lot. Still, they largely agree on two points: the two-party system is deeply flawed, and they feel poorly represented by the major parties and the established political process. Yet Independents at the extremes of the political spectrum are responsible for many new ideas that make their way into mainstream policy. And moderate Independents increasingly define the mainstream center of American thought, between the increasingly rancorous politics of Democrats and Republicans. While the number of Independents is on the rise nationally, New Hampshire is near the top. Fully 42% of NH voters are registered Independent ("undeclared") compared to 31% Republican and 27% Democrat. |
